Scientists find 5,000-year-old fossil of couple hugging

I know this is kind of old news. Archaeologists in Italy have discovered a couple buried 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, hugging each other. I saw it on Yahoo a few days ago. But, as an author of romance, I found my thoughts going back to the story often. I wondered what could have lead to the couple's death and if they were lovers or family members? Had they died suddenly? Or was this a Romeo & Juliet kind of thing? Could this couple, hugging for all eternity, have ended their lives just so they could be together for all eternity? The thoughts just kept coming. And, of course, so did the story ideas.

For all you writers out there, how often do you find your story ideas coming from real-life events and news stories? And, for you non-writers, have you ever read a book and thought: hey, that sounds like something I've heard in the news?

It was probably romantic, but they could have been "posed" buy the burial party. Unless they lay where they died. Interesting discovery =)

I get ideas from all over. Sometimes from meditation, like Immortal Protector. Come to think of it, the main plot for the next book Nobody's Hero also came from meditating. Weird science also triggers stuff for me. And the news. Nothing is stranger than reality. History and Myth are big sources for me as well. I think, though, I am attracted to ideas out of the morass of info that bombards me on a daily basis when those ideas or things touch on deeper themes that resonate with me. So out of 10 weird news stories, I'd gravitate, knowingly or unknowingly, towards the one of the ten that speaks to themes that are deeper for me.

se7en,

If they were "posed", I'm thinking they must have had some kind of relationship that would warrant them being buried in such a manner. Though, they could have just been huddling together for warmth and died of hypothermia. I'm going to have to see if I can find more info on the tests they've been running.

It's great to see you over here again. I hope you are feeling better. I'm sending some fast recovery vibes your way!

Ursula,

I love that you get ideas from meditation. Very cool. I get a lot of my ideas from research I'm doing for current WIPs. That is how Andromeda's Tear came about. I was researching something for another project, and I ran across a translation of Ovid's Metamorphosis. Book 15, I believe. It is the story of Perseus and Andromeda. It gave me the idea for the "legend" behind Andromeda's Tear
