What do you read?

Thanks so much for letting me guest blog today, Sandy. I hope everyone's having a great summer so far.

Being an avid reader, a lot of the conversations I have with friends revolve around books. I have to say, I'm not often a very deep reader. I don't usually read literary novels. I just want to be entertained. Whether it's a fast-paced thriller, a breath-stealing paranormal or horror novel, or a steamy romance, if the author can entertain me, I enjoy the book.

Back about six or seven years ago, when my daughter was in preschool, her teacher used to pass on books to me she thought I'd enjoy. Lisa Gardner, Sandra Brown, and Iris Johansen are some of the names that come to mind, though I know there were others. She always swore she didn't read romance--they were suspense books. One of the other teachers used to laugh and say calling them suspense books was a convenient excuse--one people used when they didn't want to admit they were reading romance novels.

At the time, the only romance I was reading was romantic suspense, along with mainstream thrillers and horror books. Though I'd read a couple of historicals as a teenager, I didn't pick up a contemporary romance until after I started writing--sometime in 2001. I was hooked pretty much right away. My family gets a big kick out of this, since anyone who knows me knows I'm probably one of the least romantic women on the planet. *grin*

Now I read a little bit of everything, but I have no problem admitting I read romance. There's nothing wrong with wanting a happy ending, right?

I ran into the teacher at the store a little while back, and I had some Blaze books in my shopping cart. She asked me if I was reading "those books" now, and I had to laugh. I told her I was, and I asked her if she was still reading them, too.

What kinds of books do you read?

I'll draw a random name from the responses to win a print copy of Settling the Score.

Oh, I read mostly romance. I've been hooked on it ever since I was a teen. I think it was Rosemary Rogers that grabbed me. These days I still read romance, some science fiction, thrillers (legal, spy, romance), historical fiction, and kid lit. Two of my most recent favorites are The Book Thief by Zusak and Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife by Berdoll. I highly recommend both of them.

Hello there,

I'll tell everybody what I read and what I write. My husband always say I read sappy romance books. -lol He calls my music the same. Like you I got a late start reading for enjoyment. Now there's no stopping me.

I read paranormal romance but for the longest while, I would never admit I read romance so I would 'pretend' that it was a suspense or something. I would point out a certain plot hook such as a murder or whatever and be 'see it's not romance!'.

How sad that we can't come out of the closet! Why is it that it's socially acceptable to like romantic movies, but romantic books? How trashy of you!

I think it's ridiculous.

Thanks, Elisa! Great topic. I started reading romance when I was 16. A friend of mine let me borrow one (Gentle Warrior - Julie Garwood), and I was hooked from that day on.

It's funny how so many people view romance novels. The looks I used to get when someone got a glimpse of the cover. Sheesh! Let me tell you, I was a HUGE fan of the double flap covers. It made for a lot less defending of my reading choices.

Of course, at the time, I never imagined I'd be writing romance. How does everyone handle explaining that to non-romance readers? Do you just say you write books? Or do you come out and proudly mention you write romance. Ooooo, what about you erotic romance writers? How do you explain that one? *bg*

dd ~ I am a big fan of the erotic romance.

Mel ~ Love the paranormals. Especially the ones with alpha males and heroines unwilling to put up with them. Makes for a great read! It's so much fun when they fall.

Kate ~ Thanks for the recommendations. I'll have to add them to my TBR list. Ahhh, so many books - so little time. ;-)

Dana ~ Another author I've heard great things about and have yet to read. Looks like JDRobb has just been added to my TBR list as well.

I mostly read paranormal romance as well. Okay all romance. I'm not picky. :)
Other than that I read mythology and alternative archaeology books. Just as exciting but without the nookie.

Like you Elisa, I read anything that entertains me. If there's serious social commentary in the subtext, it's likely not on my bookshelf.

Anything with lush descriptions and fantastic historical detail makes my day. I'm also slowly adding paranormals to my collection.

In romance, contemproary paranormals, some suspense, and regency. I'd love a cowboy historical if I could find some. And, general contemporary family saga style romance.

Then, it's a mixed bag, mostly sci fi, urban dark fantasy, and the occasional science or history book.

You know, I actually think this is interesting because until January of this year I had always perceived myself as writing suspense. I didn't read romance and never really had so I just saw the books as suspense with romance in them but that was no big deal. Then I engaged in a project that actually required that I read a lot of romance books and what do you know...I suddenly discovered that not only do I like romance, I also have been writing it for years without even knowing. Talk about living in ignorance.
